DINGHY RACE #3 Saturday 24th October 2015
A brisk NW F4 gusting F5 wind was the backdrop for an exciting afternoon on the water with 13 crew in 7 boats focused more on remaining upright than competing in the race.
Nick Ferneyhough and James Platts in the safety boat had their hands full with a succession of capsizes which more often than not resulted in the boats ‘turning turtle’ due to the strong wind. An early victim of the blustery conditions was Graham Reed in a Laser Radial who retired after gear failure led to a number of strength-sapping capsizes.
Sam Madar and Richard Platts also failed to make the start of the race in Sam’s ‘new’ Laser 2 Regatta due to problems with the tiller as too did John Madar, Judy and Gary Strong in John’s Wayfarer which stood by.
Four boats crossed the start line. Chris and Sue Coomber in their Comet Trio, Steve and Aaron Kirby in a Lark, and Jo Coomber and Sophie Dandy, both on a weekend break from University, in a Europe and a Laser Radial respectively. Unable or unwilling to reef their sails, the helms and crew were tested to the limits of their abilities. Steve and Aaron led the fleet from the start with Jo Coomber in close contention until a capsize and subsequent ‘mast in the mud’ scenario, close to the finish line, put her out of the race. With the other two boats retiring, Steve and Aaron crossed the line in record time in a race which showed their exemplary boat handling skills.
So there we have it.....7 boats set out, 4 started the race and only 1 finished!
